Embedded Linux is moving into the point-of-sale (POS) market with BlueCat Linux POS. Based on the 2.6 Linux kernel, this version of Linux includes support for JavaPOS, Web server, and development and monitoring utilities and tools for the POS developer. The operating system (OS) includes drivers for POS terminals and devices like RFID readers. The small-footprint OS can handle many applications with as little as 8 Mbytes of memory, or 16 Mbytes if JavaPOS is required. BlueCat Linux POS is certified to run on x86 processors.
