Using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, the Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) has created a 200-Gbyte 2.5-in. hard-disk drive (HDD). Toshiba’s second-generation PMR features what the company claims is the world’s highest areal density at 178.8 Gbits/in.2 and the highest capacity in the standard 9.5-mm mobile PC format.
The 200-Gbyte dual-platter MK2035GSS is Toshiba’s first PMR drive to incorporate tunnel magnetoresistive recording (TMR) head technology. It weighs just 98 g and incorporates the Serial ATA (SATA) II interface with native command queuing, enabling faster data-transfer rates (150 Mbytes/s) and improved technical performance. Average seek time is 12 ms.
The drive measures 69.85 by 100.0 by 9.5 mm. Energy consumption efficiency is 0.00335 W/Gbyte. Toshiba will start mass production of the 2.5-in. 200-Gbyte MK2035GSS HDD in August.
