EMC Symposium New Product Preview

More than 200 companies will exhibit products and services Aug. 19-21 during the 2003 IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston. The exhibit will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 20) and from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday.

During the symposium, industry experts from around the world will present technical papers and sessions, workshops, and tutorials. The program begins on Monday (Aug. 18) with several workshops and IEEE committee meetings. After a three-day break for the technical sessions, four additional workshops on Friday (Aug. 22) close out the symposium.

The traditional five-track technical program begins Tuesday and continues through Thursday. The schedule includes nearly 200 technical papers on many aspects of EMC along with open-format sessions so participants can have less formal discussions with authors.

Previews of many products that will be exhibited at the symposium are highlighted in this article. To register for the symposium and reserve hotel accommodations, contact the 2003 IEEE EMC Symposium at 732-562-3870 or www.emc2003.org. A schedule of technical sessions and workshops can be found in the July issue of EE and on our website at www.evaluationengineering.com/archive/articles/0703symposium.htm.

Snap-On Suppressors

EMI/RFI Window Screens

EMI/RFI Window Screens for applications such as monitors consist of a very fine woven wire cloth, typically stainless steel 100 × 100 mesh with a 0.001″ wire diameter. For some applications, the wires are coated to give them a blackened surface to improve light transmission and reduce reflection. The telecommunications industry uses small windows of approximately 1″ × 2″. The network computer industry generally requires windows up to 6″ × 12″. Orion Industries, www.rsleads.com/308ee-196

D-Connector Gaskets

A series of D-connector gaskets for grounding and RFI shielding features a low-compression-set silicone sponge core. A conductive outer layer is coextruded and provides low-contact resistance over an inner sponge core. The gaskets fit most nine- through 50-pin layouts and offer rear- or front-mount capabilities using optional adhesive assembly strips. Custom configurations are available. Vanguard Products, www.rsleads.com/308ee-194

Power Line Filters

A line of 48-VDC power line filters is designed for input lines, power supplies, and power distribution systems for use in the telecommunications, industrial measuring equipment, and industrial controls markets. The filters feature a wide scope of attenuation characteristics and have current ratings from 6 A to 260 A. The voltage rating is 250 VAC maximum. Filtering is effective from 100 kHz to 3 MHz with proper installation. Spectrum Control, www.rsleads.com/308ee-193

Multiturn Sleeve Snap

A high-impedance sleeve snap for round cables attenuates frequencies up to 1 GHz and features a serpentine cable-threading capability. Increasing the number of times the circuit passes through the ferrite core lengthens the magnetic path. The gain is the square of the number of turns. The one-hole style allows two passes of up to 0.365″ dia cable or three passes of up to 0.243″ cable. The two-hole design accommodates two passes of up to 0.335″ dia cable. The three-hole sleeve houses three passes of up to 0.203″ dia cable. Each unit comes in gray or black and with an optional adhesive foam-pad mounting base. FerriShield, www.rsleads.com/308ee-192

Modular Simulator

Modula is an open-architecture system that simulates electromagnetic interference effects and performs immunity tests to international, national, and in-house standards. All system components are defined as function units, such as a pulse generator or a high-voltage source. Interbus connections enable external system components to be included in the same manner as modules housed in the system casing itself. Ethernet (TCP/IP protocol) is used to connect to a PC for networking purposes, and IEC-compatible connectors are used on the equipment and test-object side. The operating system software has been developed using the LabVIEW standard running under Windows. Schaffner EMC, www.rsleads.com/308ee-197

Board-Level Shielding

snapSHOT™ is an EMI board-level, multicavity, metallized, thermoformed plastic shield. It is electrically insulative on the inside and attaches to a PCB using the company’s patented snap-attachment mechanism. The shield, manufactured from a high-temperature, lightweight plastic material, comes in bulk, trays, or tape-and-reel and can be installed using manual, semi-automated, or fully automated equipment. W.L. Gore & Associates, www.rsleads.com/308ee-201

Strip Gaskets

Quick-Strip Gaskets are manufactured using Quick-Shield stainless steel spiral and an adhesive-backed neoprene sponge elastomer. The surface-mounted gaskets offer shielding of >95 dB in continuous lengths and come in low (1.5-lb) and moderate (10-lb) resiliencies in 0.063″, 0.094″, 0.125″, and 0.187″ diameters and elastomer widths of 0.250″ and 0.375″. They are available with impedance values of 90, 120, 160, or 200 W at 100 MHz and in a 1.25 × 1.0 × 0.082 mm package. The series is designed for filtering high-speed interfaces such as USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394. Murata Electronics, www.rsleads.com/308ee-203

MIL-STD-46IE Measurement Capability

The EMC46IE Precompliance Measurement System, including the company’s 401B Spectrum Analyzer and software to operate on any Windows-based PC, performs MIL-STD-46IE radiated measurements. The antenna factors for many EMC measurement antennas are stored in the software or can be entered from the PC keyboard. A 26-dB gain preamplifier with the system interfaces to most antennas, and an SMA cable connects the preamplifier output to the input of the spectrum analyzer. The software compensates for the antenna factor, preamplifier gain, and cable loss. The results are measurements directly in dBµV/m. Limit lines for all MIL-STD-461E radiated emission standards can be displayed. Bantam Instruments, www.rsleads.com/308ee-195

Vent Panels

MaxAir™ Vent Panels are constructed of nickel/copper-plated polymeric honeycomb with a compressible conductive foam band. Compared to traditional honeycomb vent panels, the frameless, dent-resistant vents permit 10% to 20% more useable airflow throughout the surface. The panels can be machined to accommodate special features such as recess and rabbit cuts and come standard in ¼” and 1/8″ cell sizes and ¼” and ½” thicknesses. Other thicknesses are available on request. Laird Technologies, www.rsleads.com/308ee-199
