Its Time Is Now

You probably are aware that LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation (LXI) is a new communications interface for the test and measurement industry based on IEEE 802.3, IEEE 1588, and TCP/IP. You also may know that a group of equipment companies has formed a consortium chartered to create a standard governing the implementation of Ethernet for instrument control and to promote the adoption of LXI worldwide. The standard formalizes the regulations and specifications LXI products must meet including physical, electrical, timing and synchronization, triggering, and interoperability.

Possibly you saw an announcement in this month's EE or in a prior issue introducing a new magazine exclusive to LXI. The magazine, LXI ConneXion , published by Nelson Publishing, the parent company of EE, will make its formal debut at AUTOTESTCON in Orlando later this month.

The most important component of any publication is editorial content. Each quarter, LXI ConneXion promises to deliver in-depth feature articles written by industry experts that provide information engineers and engineering managers need to make informed decisions in their work.

We are pleased to have the services of an able industry veteran to guide the editorial direction of LXI ConneXion. Mike Dewey has been active in the test and measurement industry for more than 20 years. Currently, he is marketing product manager at Geotest-Marvin Test Systems, a supplier of instrumentation and test systems for the commercial and military/aerospace markets.

Mike has held various positions in design engineering, engineering management, marketing, and product management. He holds a B.S.M.E. from Syracuse University and an M.S.E.E. from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Prior to his present position, Mike was employed at GenRad/Teradyne where he held design and product management positions for GenRad's field-service test systems, the VXI-based GENEVA product line, and the PXI-based Versa products. He also has worked as a product manager for Teradyne's military/aerospace business unit providing technical support, marketing, and product management for the company's Spectrum platform and associated instrumentation.

Previously, Mike was involved in the development of an integrated pulsed Doppler instrument for the detection of blood flow used in conjunction with ADR Ultrasound's real-time cardiac imaging system. At Motorola, he worked as a design engineer on VHF and UHF radios.

Mike is a member of the IEEE and has been active as an officer with the Boston Instrumentation and Measurement Section since 1992. He has served as a board member for both the PXI Systems Alliance and the VXI Consortium. He also has been an LXI Consortium advisory member on both the technical and physical working group committees.

Please welcome Mike as contributing editor of LXI ConneXion and look for his column and feature article in each issue. Should you make your way to hot and steamy Orlando this month, say hello to Mike at AUTOTESTCON. He ll be there. And while you re at the show, be sure to stop by the EE booth (#1430) and pick up a copy of the new publication.
