th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin. New feature added to the technical program and a special salute to one of the first-ever EMC engineers are highlights of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility Aug. 14-18 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. This year, the theme is Exploring EMC Frontiers as symposium planners debut Close Format Presentations and pay tribute to the 300
In its entirety, the five-day schedule features the keynote address “Role of Engineers in Poverty Reduction: Challenges and Opportunities,” workshops and tutorials, open forums, technical paper sessions, special technical paper sessions, and experiments and demonstrations.
Close Format Presentations, an entirely new format for EMC 2006, will accommodate technical papers whose topics are difficult to convey in a 20-minute lecture. The venue is a forum for papers that require significant explanation to understand the complexities that were discovered during its conception. Each Close Format Presentation will be two hours long.
The 25 Close Format Presentations represent only a portion of the offerings that make up the traditional technical program on Tuesday (Aug. 15), Wednesday (Aug. 16), and Thursday (Aug. 17). Technical papers totaling 118 will be presented in several categories: computational electromagnetic; signal integrity; electromagnetic environment; EMC measurements; electromagnetic interference; high-power electromagnetics; EMC managements and product safety; electromagnetic measurements and computation; and time domain, interference, and signal integrity. Each paper will be followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer session.
The workshops will be conducted on Monday (Aug. 14) and Friday (Aug. 18). There are five tracks featuring a mix of popular topics returning for another year plus several new ones created to reflect evolving interests and concerns in the industry.
A schedule of the workshops and technical program, including the titles of individual presentations, accompanies this article.
Exhibits
In addition to more than 200 booths displaying the products and services of the EMC industry, the Technical Exhibit program includes the New Product Showcase where exhibitors will give short on-stage presentations on new products. The showcase has expanded to include a special section on tabletop displays for highlighting only new products. Exhibit hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday.
NARTE Examination
The NARTE certification exam, a traditional complement to the symposium, will be held Friday. A half-day workshop conducted on Monday, “Preparing for the NARTE Exam,” is open to all fully registered symposium attendees. Registration for the exam can be completed online; by phone, mail or fax; or at NARTE’s booth (#2303) until 3 p.m. Thursday. For more information, call 800-896-2783 or visit www.narte.org.
Registration and Reservations
