NXP's RT11xx series of real-time microcontroller units (MCUs) provide deterministic Ethernet communication (see figure). They're well-suited for industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. Jeff Steinheider, General Manager of Industrial Edge Processing Products, talks about a demo incorporating these MCUs.

The latest NXP RT1180 incorporates a full integrated time-sensitive-networking (TSN) switch for deterministic communication. The system also has EtherCAT support. The main CPU is an Arm Cortex-M7, while a second Cortex-M33 helps manage security. The EdgeLock Secure Enclave provides secure-boot support along with its own public and private key storage and hardware encryption acceleration.
