Freescale adds S08SG MCUs for body and chassis applications

Freescale (www.freescale.com) has added two new devices to its 8-bit S08SG microcontroller family for cost-sensitive and space-constrained body and chassis applications.

Freescale has added two new devices to its 8-bit S08SG microcontroller family for cost-sensitive and space-constrained body and chassis applications. The S08SG16 and S08SG32 target body control modules, LIN nodes, mirror modules, window-lift, battery management systems, HVAC control, and heated seat modules, among other applications.

Operating at up to 40 MHz with 16 K and 32 K flash memory options, the S08SG16/32 include on-chip timers for motor control applications and an on-chip serial communications interface (SCI) said to enable simplified development of LIN systems. The devices also are designed to enable simplified development of LIN systems through an on-chip serial communications interface (SCI). The SCI module allows LIN break detection and synchronization without the use of an external timer channel.
The S08SG16/32 are designed to save board space and enhance quality by eliminating the need for peripheral board components such as external clock sources. Other features include low-voltage inhibit (LVI) circuits, voltage regulators, I/O multiplexers, watchdog circuits and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs).

An on-chip background debug mode (BDM) capability enables developers to perform non-intrusive debugging and emulation on the fly. The feature is said to be valuable for debugging multi-MCU systems in chassis and powertrain applications without interfering with software execution.
The DEMO9SG32AUTO demonstration board is available for a suggested retail price of $69 and the MCUs are supported by Freescale's CodeWarrior v6.1 Development Studio. Samples of the S08SG16/32 are available, and additional information is available at www.freescale.com/ files/pr/automotive.html.
