STMicroelectronics (www.st.com) has formally introduced Cartesio (STA2062), a single-chip, automotive grade application processor with embedded GPS for navigation and telematics.

STMicroelectronics has formally introduced Cartesio (STA2062), a single-chip, automotive-grade application processor with embedded GPS for navigation and telematics. Applications include OEM and portable navigation devices, vehicle tracking systems, electronic fee collection, and advanced car radio.

Cartesio integrates a 32-bit ARM CPU core with a high-sensitivity 32-channel GPS subsystem and connectivity peripherals including CAN, USB, UARTs, and SPI. It also provides on-chip high-speed RAM and real-time clock functionality.

Domenico Rossi, general manager of ST's Car Radio and Multimedia Division, says Cartesio is designed to complement ST’s GPS RF chip, STA5620, for a combination with a smaller form factor and lower-cost bill-of-materials.

The research firm iSuppli ranks ST as the leading producer of semiconductors for Car Infotainment and a top-three chip supplier to the automotive industry.

ST's STA2062 is housed in 16 mm x 16 mm x 1.4 mm LFBGA packages with a 0.8 mm ball pitch. Samples are available, with volume production scheduled for April 2008. Pricing for the combination of the STA2062 navigation processor and the STA5620 RF companion chip is less than $10 in volume.
