Laser firms ready Team-LUX for DARPA Urban Challenge

Ibeo Automobile Sensor GmbH (www.ibeo-as.com) and its parent firm SICK AG (www.sick.de) are preparing their entry, Team-LUX (www.team-lux.com), for the DARPA Urban Challenge coming November 3.

Ibeo Automobile Sensor GmbH and its parent firm SICK AG are preparing their entry, Team-LUX, for the DARPA Urban Challenge coming Nov. 3.

In the challenge, autonomous (driverless) vehicles will be required to complete a 60-mile course in a simulated urban area in less than six hours while obeying all traffic regulations and avoiding vehicles and obstacles.

The Team-LUX entry, which will be on display in Opelika, Ala. June 30 through July 2, is a standard production vehicle equipped with three prototype sensors that feature the firms’ newest automotive laser scanner technology. More than half of the entrants in the DARPA Urban Challenge will be equipped with “intelligent eyes” from Ibeo and/or SICK, according to the companies.
