Auto Electronics' Mark David gets a walk-through from Ryan D. Lamm Section Manager of SWI's autonomous-capable Ford Explorer, which wowed the crowd at ITS with its ability not only to independently maneuver the streets of Manhattan via its own intelligence, but also to communicate with other vehicles and with traffic signals using DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications). Ryan says that the Explorer went beyond technology previously demonstrated at DARPA's Grand Challenge by showcasing the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside communications, and integrating those technologies with active safety systems.
