Renesas SuperH MCU targets next-generation powertrains

In addition to its 16-bit R8C/Tiny microcontrollers, Renesas also added the SH72544R to its SuperH family 32-bit RISC microcontrollers. The new device is said to enable the design of advanced electronic controls for car and truck engines and transmissions that boost efficiency, decrease emissions, and improve performance. Operating at speeds up to 200 MHz, the MCU achieves 400-MIPS performance and has 2.5 Mbytes of on-chip flash memory for storing real-time control algorithms. The SH72544R is available in a 272-pin P-BGA specified for operation at 125 °C.

Amrit Vivekanand, marketing manager for Renesas’ automotive business unit, said customers using the SH72546RFCC software-development MCU that the firm introduced last year can use the system hardware, programs, and other design assets they have developed.

He added that the 32-bit SH-2A superscalar RISC CPU core in the SH72544R has the computing power needed to execute fine-grained, high-level, real-time control of engine/transmission systems. Integrated peripheral functions are also designed to meet the specific requirements of advanced engine and transmission control systems. Peripherals include a multifunction timer (ATU-III: Advanced Timer Unit III); a 12-bit, multichannel A/D converter; CAN interface, high-speed serial interface functions, and a multi-input signature generator.

Manufactured in a 90 nm process, the MCU consumes less than 900 mW, even when operating at 200 MHz in +125 °C environment. Its flash capacity is 2.5 times that of the SH7058, and is said to be sufficient for storing the larger application programs required to obtain powertrain performance improvements. For data storage, the MCU provides 128 Kbytes of flash memory with functions and endurance essentially equivalent to those of EEPROM. This eliminates the need for external EEPROM.

Vivekanand said Renesas has applied “unique technologies” to increase the speed of the flash built into the SH72544R. A low-power cache system is designed to optimize the use of flash memory su SH72544R ch that overall performance is “essentially equal to single-cycle access at 200 MHz.”

The SH72546RF is priced at $93.
