NAVTEQ licenses LandSonar traffic speed pattern technology

Aug. 3, 2006
Digital map data provider NAVTEQ (www.navteq.com) has licensed LandSonar’s (www.landsonar.com) LandSonar Predictive Speed (LPS) product.

Digital map data provider NAVTEQ has licensed LandSonar's LandSonar Predictive Speed (LPS) product. The combination of NAVTEQ's map data and LPS' predictive speed capability should offer more accurate and efficient route planning and better trip time estimation, the firms said.

LandSonar can project speeds to the NAVTEQ linkID and traffic code level on roads throughout the continental United States in increments as short as 15 minutes. The firm compiles and analyzes historical and real-time traffic data, including one million or more mobile GPS observations per- hour. That data is converted to a vector data format, after which proprietary predictive algorithms are applied to determine road speed and time estimates. Predictions are subsequently formatted as map data and distributed via a software service or third-party systems.
