385-V dc Surge Filters on Track for Railway Apps

Traco Power’s TFI series of surge filters is RIA12 and NFF 01-510 compliant for surge susceptibility protection.

Traco Power announced the release of its TFI series of surge filters designed to clamp momentary overvoltage transients up to 385 V dc (20 ms) to protect dc-dc converters from being damaged. Input transients defined by EN 50155 (up to 154 V dc) are covered by the wide input range of dedicated railway converters. This level of protection is specifically required in railway applications where high-voltage transients are expected; they can also be used for 72-, 96-, and 110-V dc battery systems.

The series consists of three wattage models: the TFI 20 (20 W in a DIP-24 package), TFI 150 (150 W in a 1.6 x 2-in. footprint), and TFI 300 (300 W in a 1.6 x 2-in. footprint). Each TFI filter operates over a 43- to 160-V dc range and is fully encapsulated within a plastic package for MIL-STD-810 thermal shock and vibration protection, says the company.

Features include an operating temperature range of -40 to +95°C and a minimum 36-V dc brownout. During normal operation, the output voltage follows the input voltage (Vout = Vin – 2 V dc typ.) up to the point of 168 V dc, where the voltage is actively clamped. All models are RIA 12 and NFF 01-510 compliant for surge susceptibility protection and are supported by Traco Power's three-year product warranty.
