Sun Microsystems launched the first server computers based on the UltraSparc T2 chip, its newest microprocessor. Sun claims the chip is the world's fastest commodity processor, and the company is using it in servers that host Web sites and run corporate networks. Sun says the new servers deliver the same performance in a quarter of the space and at less than half the cost of competing systems. The company is attempting to boost sales of energy-efficient, high-performance computers for businesses, according to Reuters reports. "Power efficiency is becoming the most attractive element of computing infrastructures," Sun Chief Executive Jonathan Schwartz told Reuters. "We have a huge shot at being the leader in power-efficient computing." Sun also plans to sell the UltraSparc T2 chip to makers of set-top boxes and network routers to expand its portfolio beyond server computers and data storage machines.
