Small Form Factors Suit Ultracaps For Portable Applications

June 18, 2007
Tecate Industries has expanded its line of 2.7-V PowerBurst ultracapacitors, which now range in value from 0.5 F to 300 F.

The latest members of the 2.7-V PowerBurst family of cylindrical, radial-leaded ultracapacitor cells made by Tecate Industries are a 10-F version in the TPL series and a 100-F model in the TPLS series. Used for pulse and hold-up power in handheld and portable devices employing microprocessors, the RoHS-compatible TPL/TPLS series of PowerBurst ultracapacitors come in values from 0.5 to 300 F.

The electrochemical double-layer devices offer extremely low equivalent series resistance for high power and low loss during operation. They are lightweight, small-form-factor parts that are maintenance-free, have a wide operating temperature range, and offer a 500,000-cycle life. The capacitors charge quickly and safely and also deliver frequent energy pulses without harmful effects or reduced life.

The cells can be used to hold or bridge power when the primary source fails or when a battery is swapped out. Their operating temperature range is −40°C to 70°C, making them a suitable alternative for batteries in very low temperature applications. The TPL series comes in 18 capacitance values from 0.5 to 70 F and in sizes from 8-mm (diameter) by 12-mm (long) to 18-mm (dia.) by 45-mm (long). The TPLS series comes in four values from 100 to 300 F. Sizes range from 22-mm (dia.) by 45-mm (long) to 35-mm (dia.) by 50-mm (long). Tolerance is −20% to +30%.

AVAILABILITY
Delivery is from stock to six weeks. PRICING
In quantities of 1000, the TPL series ultracapacitors cost $1.70 each for values of 10 F, and the TPLS series costs $7.50 each for 100-F units. FOR MORE INFORMATION
