Integrating LCD backlighting, novel light controls, and ambient-light sensing, the NCP5890 lighting-management chip in a 3 mm x 3 mm x 0.5 mm µQFN-16 package. delivers a 30V output to drive LEDs in series. The device controls three sets of white LEDs or RGB LEDs to create unique light patterns on keypads or chassis in combination with backlighting. Also, the driver section extends battery life by adjusting the backlight current according to the ambient light level. Other features include an overall power efficiency up to 90% at a 1.3-MHz oscillator frequency, gradual dimming, support for I²C with two separate address options, and a true cut-off function that limits leakage output current in shut-down mode. Price for the NCP5890 is $1.30 each/3,000. ON SEMICONDUCTOR, Phoenix, AZ. (800) 282-9855.
