Narrow Directivity And High-Speed Response Characterize New IR LEDs

Through use of an unique aspheric lens, the L8506 infrared (IR) light emitting diode (LED) emits a light beam with a directivity of just ±5°. The collimated light beam discharged by the IR LED produces the uniform light spot necessary for use in optical encoders. And in addition to its narrow directivity, the L8506 also offers a high-speed response and high reliability, making it well-suited for a variety of other applications requiring a precision light source, such as in optical switches. The L8506 IR LED is also said to produce excellent light intensity distribution, evident by its typical spot light size of 4.3 mm, as well as offering a typical response of 40 MHz and a typical peak emission wavelength cut off frequency of 870 nm. And by using a non-confined structure chip that does not deteriorate suddenly, the L8506 can deliver improved reliability over conventional IR LEDs using confined chips. In addition, the L8506 is housed in a durable package that allows it to maintain performance over wide temperature changes and in rugged environments. The new IR LED has a -30°C to +85°C operating temperature range, measures 18.8 mm high x 5.4 mm wide, and costs $3.45 each in OEM quantities.
