Optical Sensor Elevates Integration Benchmarks

Dec. 23, 2010
In a 3.95 mm x 3.95 mm x 0.75 mm package, the VCNL4000 proximity/ambient-light sensor integrates an IR emitter, PIN photo diode, ambient light detector, signal processing IC, and a 16-bit ADC.

In a 3.95 mm x 3.95 mm x 0.75 mm package, the VCNL4000 proximity/ambient-light sensor integrates an IR emitter, PIN photo diode, ambient light detector, signal processing IC, and a 16-bit ADC. This level of integration eliminates the need for light barriers and optical alignment of the IR emitter and photo diode. The device's programmable LED drive current from 10 mA to 200 mA in 10 mA steps enables sensing distances up to 200 mm. Its ambient light PIN photo diode offers sensitivity close to that of the human eye with a 16-bit dynamic range for ambient light detection from 0.33 lux to 22 klux. Other features include a 100 Hz and 120 Hz flicker noise rejection, stand-by current consumption of 1.5µA, supply voltage range of 2.5V to 3.6V, a moisture sensitivity level of 4, and an operating temperature range from -25°C to + 85°C. Price for the VCNL4000 starts at $1.20 each/1,800 (one reel). VISHAY INTERTECHNOLOGY, INC., Malvern, PA. (619) 336-0860.
