Portable storage and communication have become increasingly important as mobile devices continue to multiply. Oxford Semiconductor's OXU140CM addresses USB and storage connectivity needs in a single chip. A host can use the memory-mapped interface to access USB and CE-ATA/MMC interfaces. CE-ATA/MMC can handle a range of flash and hard-disk media.

The chip has two full-speed USB host ports and one high-speed port (see the figure). The chip also can be configured with a single full-speed port and an On-The-Go (OTG) port. It supports up to eight bidirectional endpoints.

The CE-ATA/MMC disk/flash interface operates independently of the USB support. It conforms to the CE-ATA 1.1 and MMC 4.1 standards. Also, 16 kbytes of SRAM are available for buffering. The disk/flash includes dual DMA channel support. And, the 3.3-V chip has an onchip charge pump capable of generating 100 ma for USB devices.

Drivers for Windows CE 5.0 and Linux 2.6.x are available. The OXU14OCM is available in a 128-pin low-profile quad-flat package or 100-pin ball-grid array packages. Pricing starts at $5.75.
