Discrete Power Semiconductor Supplier Eyes SiC Diodes

Aiming to tap the benefits of zero recovery current and negligible switching losses with high temperature capability of silicon carbide (SiC)-based Schottky diodes, discrete power semiconductor supplier Advanced Power Technology (APT) has inked a licensing deal with Cree Inc. Under this agreement, APT will purchase Cree’s SiC zero-recovery Schottky diode dies, and produce packaged devices and modules under its own brand name.

Using alternative packaging and innovative engineering, APT intends to address market segments not served by Cree. In addition, it will explore military, industrial, communications, semiconductor equipment, and medical applications for its SiC Schottky diodes and other designs created using these high-performance diodes. According to Glenn Wright, APT’s vice president of marketing and business development, APT intends to explore applications where low losses are critical and cost is warranted. This marks APT’s first offerings in SiC, said Wright.

In addition to standard plastic packages, the SiC diodes will be available in hermetic and high-performance packages. The plastic packages will be assembled in the Philippines, while the hermetic and advanced packages will be produced in the company’s facilities in Bend, Ore., and Bordeaux, France. APT will use its expertise in high-power semiconductor manufacturing to offer multidie parallel discrete devices in TO-220, TO-247, D2, D3, and SOT-227 packages, as well as hermetic packages with and without military screening. The dual-die packages will offer common cathode configuration. Furthermore, the supplier will offer the latest generations of MOSFETs and IGBTs built in combination with the SiC Schottky diodes in both boost and buck configurations. Power modules and other custom designs using the SiC zero recovery Schottky diodes will also be offered.

All SiC-based diodes in plastic packages will be rated at 175°C, while hermetic and high-performance packages will be rated at higher temperatures. Due to higher band gap property, these devices will offer extremely low leakage at elevated temperature. Other features include high thermal conductivity, faster switching speed compared to silicon diodes, and 600V to 1200V breakdown capability.

APT is already in sampling mode of 6A and 10A SiC Schottky diodes in plastic packages with plans to take these into production in the fourth quarter. For more information, visit www.advancedpower.com.

Headphone Amp

Maxim Integrated Products’ new MAX4411B headphone amplifier combines the patented stereo DirectDrive technology with a fixed-gain (-2V/V) configuration. This combination eliminates both the bulky dc-blocking capacitors and the external-gain setting resistors. The result is a low-cost, ultracompact headphone amp requiring very few external components and making it ideal for compact, portable equipment with audio playback.

DirectDrive generates a ground-referenced output from a single 1.8V to 3.6V supply, which unlike competing solutions, doesn’t require a mid-rail dc bias voltage to be applied to the headphone jack ground pin. This doubles the dynamic range of the output swing and simplifies end-product design and reliability.

The MAX4411B has a fixed gain of -2V/V, produces 80MW per channel into a 16Ω load, and has very low 0.003% THD + N. A high 86 dB PSRR at 217 Hz allows direct operation from noisy supplies without additional conditioning. Independent left/right, low-power shutdown controls optimize power savings in mixed mode mono/stereo applications. In addition to minimizing size, the elimination of dc-blocking capacitors improves the amplifier's low-frequency response, allowing full-range audio reproduction. This is especially important for music and video playback. Comprehensive click-and-pop reduction circuitry ensures fast turn on/turn off times without audible glitches. Centurion Wireless Technologies Inc.’s MegaSphere antenna for in-building wireless local area networks (WLAN) features a patent-pending design. The high-performance, omnidirectional MegaSphere is designed to enhance WLAN applications that are typically performed in manufacturing and warehousing environments.

Low-Voltage Power Sequencers

Intersil Corp.’s new series of tiny, near-chip-scale-packaged, power-sequencing ICs is targeted for low-voltage applications, such as those found in servers, blade servers, telecom/datacom line cards, graphics cards, and other PC and communications systems. The ISL6123, ISL6124, and ISL6125 low-voltage power sequencers give designers an efficient, flexible, and cost-effective means for safely powering up and powering down low-voltage systems that demand controlled and orderly power sequencing.

These new power sequencers are packaged in the very small and thermally efficient 4 mm × 4 mm Quad Flat No-lead (QFN) package and provide 4-channel control with soft-start and undervoltage protection. They are designed to sequence four voltage channels, each in the range of 0.7V to 5.5V, with any-order flexibility. This flexibility allows the designer to change timing and sequence by simply changing the values of external resistors and capacitors, without requiring any layout changes. Thus, a single part can be used to address a multitude of different voltage and sequence requirements, rather than having to inventory a different part for each combination of voltages and/or sequences.

DC-DC Controllers

Micrel’s MIC2198, MIC2199, MIC2193, MIC2194, and MIC2196 are simple-to-use, high-efficiency dc-dc controllers housed in small, low pin-count packages.

These devices are ideal for powering the latest generation chipsets in today's point-of-load dc-dc architectures. Their low output voltage capability of down to 0.8V, along with high current capability of 20A, powers the latest CPUs, DSPs and FPGAs with up to 95% efficiency. Housed in the 4 mm x 4 mm MLFTM 12-lead package, which is 46% smaller than the commonly used SO-8 package, the ICs save valuable board area. The 500-kHz operating frequency of MIC2198 further saves board space by allowing the use of small external inductor and capacitors. The MIC2198 and MIC2199 operate over a wide 4.5V to 32V input voltage range, making them suitable for 5V, 12V, and 24V power bus systems. The MIC2199 operates at a slower 300 kHz, allowing higher efficiency in high input voltage systems by reducing switching losses.

To complement the MIC2198/9 family, Micrel has also released a family of simple buck and boost controllers housed in the SO-8 package. The low pin-count of the SO-8 package allows designers to simplify their designs and use minimal external components. The MIC2193 is a high efficiency synchronous buck controller that can achieve duty-cycles up to 100%. The MIC2194 is a flexible buck controller optimized for buck step-down applications and can also be configured in a buck-boost circuit that generates negative voltages. The MIC2196 is a boost step-up controller that can generate high output voltages and currents. All three MIC2193/4/6 devices operate from 2.9V to 14V input voltages, allowing them to step up or step down 3.3V, 5V, and 12V power rails that are common in telecom/datacom/server applications. The 400 kHz operation of the MIC2193/4/6 family allows small external capacitors and inductors to be used, saving valuable board space.

Central Semiconductor Expands EOL Life Support Program

Central Semiconductor Corp. has expanded the EOL Life Support program tailored to meet the challenge of procuring the increasing diminishing source of discrete semiconductor devices worldwide. Central currently manufactures more than 1,700 direct replacement devices for which an industry demand still exists. In many instances, Central has become a sole source in this after-market segment and has frequently alleviated the headaches associated with the "Life Time Buy" (LTB) or the costly and often unnecessary redesign. Although Central also manufactures leading-edge devices specializing in custom, special, and selected devices, the trailing edge market accounts for 30% of total revenue.

Spellman Expands Spellman de Mexico Manufacturing Facility

Spellman High Voltage is expanding its state-of-the-art Spellman de Mexico production facility. Spellman’s 30,000-sq ft Mexican plant, staffed by 185 highly trained assemblers, technicians, and manufacturing engineers, produces both finished products and critical subassemblies. The expansion will add 20,000 sq ft and more than 50 workers to the operation.

The factory in Matamoros uses the same cutting-edge and proprietary encapsulation and test technologies found in its New York operation. According to Tom Swensen, who was recently promoted to director of Mexico Operations, “Our design and development centers in New York and in the United Kingdom have benefited greatly by the high quality, on time delivery, and cost savings of the work coming out of Mexico. We are adding people in our New York and Japan facilities due to our overall growth, which is partly a result of the fine work and dedication of our people in Matamoros.”

ITOCHU Corp. to Invest $3.5 Million in ENER1

ENER1 Inc. recently signed a letter of intent with ITOCHU Corp., which calls for ITOCHU to invest $3.5 million in ENER1, through a purchase of ENER1's common stock, with options to increase ITOCHU's ownership in stages. Both companies expect that this initial investment will be the first step of many in their emerging relationship, in which ITOCHU will be not only an investor, but also a technology and marketing partner with ENER1.

ITOCHU has completed its technical due diligence, and the stock purchase is expected to close within the next 30 days once the business due diligence and final agreement are successfully completed.

IEEE Ratifies PoE Standard; Interoperability Tests to Begin

Finally, years of work have paid off. Last month, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) ratified the Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard 802.3af-2003, which defines the specifications to deliver power over standard Ethernet cables. Approved by the IEEE Standards board on June 12, 2003, it’s expected to be published this month.

"The 802.3af standard will provide the first global standard for power," said Steve Carlson, chair of the 802.3af Task Force. "Thousands of new and innovative products will emerge to take advantage of having the proven robustness and reliability of Ethernet along with power on the same connector. In 10 years, no one will be able to remember when Ethernet ports didn't supply power."

According to Richard Webb, market analyst at Infonetics Research, "The 802.3af standard provides a stable basis from which vendors can continue to reduce the cost of installing and upgrading network devices; this can be a hidden cost in the deployment and scaling-up of wireless LANs and VoIP in particular, and so improves the investment case for both these technologies.

"The standard ratification will add extra impetus to the current trend amongst silicon vendors to design chipsets for laptops and portables that require low power consumption below the 12.95W prescribed in the PoE standard," said Amir Lehr, vice president, business development and strategic planning at PowerDsine. "As these devices become less power-hungry and PoE becomes the standard in most corporate IT environments, there will no longer be a need for business people to carry a variety of different plugs when traveling. Instead, the RJ45 jack will become the universal power jack. I confidently predict that in the next five years, more than 75% of enterprise network devices will be able to be powered by Ethernet."

Meanwhile, based on the new standard, major proponents like PowerDsine, Linear Technology, Maxim Integrated Products, and Texas Instruments continue to release products for this application. Others such as Intersil and Micrel are in the development mode. More are expected to join this fray. Consequently, in an effort to improve performance of PoE products supporting the new IEEE 802.3af standard, the University of New Hampshire’s InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) announced that multi-vendor PoE testing will be held August 4-8 at their facility in Durham, N.H. Member companies of the PoE consortium expected to participate include 3Com, Extreme Networks, Nortel Networks, PowerDsine, and Texas Instruments.

This PoE Group Test Period gives participating vendors the opportunity to test their PoE equipment in a small, neutral setting. Problems discovered during testing can be repaired immediately, rather than after products have been released to market. Providing interoperability and parametric testing, the UNH-IOL offers valuable feedback to vendors and the chance to examine interoperability with other implementations. The testing also allows UNH-IOL student engineers the opportunity to apply their knowledge and interact with the new technology.

According to Gerard Nadeau, manager of the UNH-IOL's PoE consortium, "The focus of our testing will be interoperability. We will also verify that power-sourcing equipment (PSE) is performing detection and powered devices (PD) are providing the proper signature. This event supports our member-based weekly testing of PoE products, utilizing tests from the IEEE 802.3af standard and those developed by our laboratory."

"Interoperability testing at the UNH-IOL is extremely valuable as the new PoE standard becomes more widely adopted with customers," said Rich Valley, vice president of TI's system power management group. "Through its relationships with the IOL and members of the PoE consortium, TI is enhancing its position to deliver advanced PoE-compliant power management solutions to our customers that have been tested and are fully interoperable."

Members can schedule individual testing at the laboratory at any time between scheduled multi-vendor group test periods. The UNH-IOL encourages vendors to conduct such testing through its provision of a neutral, multi-vendor test environment.

PWM Controller

Linear Technology’s LT1950 is a Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) controller with a sophisticated control mechanism to protect, simplify, and reduce the size of isolated/non-isolated 15W to 500W power supplies with 24V and 48V input supply rails. It features an adaptive maximum duty cycle clamp circuit to prevent transformer saturation and to protect the MOSFET from catastrophic failures. This feature reduces the transformer size by as much as 50%. Moreover, adjustable current slope compensation allows optimization of transient response with a minimum number of output capacitors.

The LT1950's programmable leading edge blanking eliminates the need for current sense filtering. Compared to dc-dc converter modules, the LT1950 solution is smaller, lighter, has lower profile and better airflow, and is significantly lower in cost. Its key applications include power supplies in telecom, industrial, medical, automotive, and aerospace systems where a high reliability isolated/nonisolated power supply rail is used to distribute power within the system.

The LT1950's adaptive maximum duty cycle clamp follows the input voltage so that load and line transients do not cause excessive flux swing in the transformer. Without this feature, designers must use an oversized transformer, larger MOSFETs and extensive filtering. With its adjustable undervoltage lockout (UVLO), the LT1950 can be easily customized to operate with a wide range of input supplies. The operating frequency is adjustable with a resistor from 100kHz to 500kHz. The IC is synchronizable to an external clock while a precision internal reference guarantees an accurate output voltage. It’s packaged in a 16-lead SSOP.

Single-Ended, Isolated Current-Sensing ICs

The HCPL-7510 and HCPL-7520 from Agilent Technologies Inc. are specifically designed for low-power electronic-controlled motor drive current-sensing applications.

These ICs incorporate advanced sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter technology to provide accurate linear current sensing performance with single-ended output. Key product specifications include 15 kV/µs common mode rejection at 1000V common mode, 100 kHz bandwidth, single-ended output, 0.06% nonlinearity, and a gain tolerance of ±3% (HCPL-7510) or ±5% (HCPL-7520). These features ensure true isolation, high noise immunity, and the stability needed to accurately monitor motor current in noisy motor control environments. Digital Potentiometer ICs

Catalyst Semiconductor’s new quad and dual Digitally Programmable Potentiometer (DPP™) integrated circuits (ICs) are designed to replace mechanical potentiometers. The quad CAT5241 and dual CAT5221 digital potentiometer ICs have 64 wiper positions. In addition, the linear-taper, nonvolatile DPP ICs are controlled over a 400 kHz, 2-wire interface. Standby power is 5 µW maximum at 5V, ideal for battery powered equipment, and 500 times lower than competitive solutions.

The CAT5241 and CAT5221 operate from a single power supply voltage that can range from 2.5V to 6V. Their maximum wiper resistance is a low 150 Ω at 5V operation. A maximum wiper resistance of 300 Ω at 3V operation is also specified.

Target applications include fiber-optic transceiver modules, RF amplifier bias and protection circuits, digital and film cameras, LCD display brightness and contrast control, transducer calibration, and programmable power supplies. With multiple pots per package, DPP solutions are lower cost and easier to mount on printed circuit boards than mechanical potentiometers.

Dual Laser Drivers

Intersil's new Elantec® EL683X family is comprised of dual output 4-channel LDDs that offer the performance, flexibility, and power efficiency needed in portable drives supporting all popular disk drive formats, including DVD+R/W, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/W, CD-R, and CD-ROM.

Each device in the EL683X family features dual output stages, one read and four write channels, and two on-chip 600-MHz high frequency modulator (HFM) oscillators that allow frequency and amplitude control by use of external resistors to ground. The external resistors allow customers to accurately and independently set each amplifier transconductance by applying a voltage to the resistor without restriction on the voltage range, thus ensuring broad voltage DAC compatibility. Catalog 1308242, Relays, Contactors, Timers, Transformers and Circuit Breakers for General Purpose Applications is now available from Tyco Electronics. This 480-page catalog describes the major series in the firm's P&B, OEG, Products Unlimited, Schrack, Agastat and Axicom product lines. ABB Wins $25 million in Multiple FACTS Orders

ABB recently received three separate orders totaling $25 million to install flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) for utilities located in the United States and Australia.
One contract, valued at approximately $13 million, was awarded by the Australian utility, TransGrid, for a static var compensator (SVC) for the 330kV ac interconnection between New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland. ABB already delivered two SVCs to PowerLink for another section of this important link. The latest SVC will be installed at the Sydney West substation in order to provide rapid voltage support to the transmission system supplying Sydney and NSW, particularly during network contingencies. This is a turnkey project scheduled for completion in July 2004.

The two U.S. contracts are worth approximately $12 million and are both upgrades of existing series compensation installations—another FACTS technology. One contract, awarded by Idaho Power, is for the replacement of an existing installation of the main 345kV system at the Goshen substation in Idaho and is vital for improving transmission capacity between generation units and load areas located in the western region of the country.

The other contract was received from Nevada Power Co. for the replacement of an existing installation at the McCullough substation, close to the city of Las Vegas. In addition to equipment delivery and site works of the new installation, this turnkey contract also includes dismantling and disposal of the existing series compensation units. The new installation will substantially increase the transmission capacity of the McCullough-Crystal line into the Los Angeles area.

The common objective of these projects is to enhance, in a cost-effective way, the feed of electrical power into major load areas in the western United States. Both projects are scheduled for completion before the summer peak load of 2004.

Rockwell Scientific Signs Contract with Lamina Ceramics

Lamina Ceramics Inc. has been awarded a contract from Rockwell Scientific to develop a package for Rockwell Scientific's RDA012M4 12 bit 1.3 GS/ 4:1 MUXDAC. The package will be developed using Lamina's low temperature co-fired ceramic on metal (LTCC-M), a proprietary multilayer technology that reduces product size, lowers costs, and improves electrical and thermal performance.

LTCC-M is ideal for products used in high bandwidth applications, such as the RDA012M4, because it delivers high heat dissipation, high component density, and low loss characteristics. Because of these performance advantages, Rockwell Scientific selected LTCC-M for its RDA012M4 package. LTCC-M's ability to have the leaded and ball grids cast in the same die was also a factor in Rockwell Scientific's decision.

Demand Increases for ‹5kVA UPS Products

In the recently released multi-volume study entitled "The 2002 Power Protection Market Intelligence Program," Venture Development Corp. (VDC) concluded in its North American Demand Analysis that the ‹5kVA UPS market is poised for extensive transition over the next five years. Global consumption of battery-powered uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) of all ranges is expected to increase at a relatively modest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.95% through 2006. Within the highly competitive North American ‹5kVA market, this growth should be driven primarily by consumer requirements for improved battery performance and an expanding set of applications for the following reasons:
  • End users do not have strong preferences towards specific brands. They do not draw associations to particular brands based on quality, service, price, or otherwise.
  • Business segments did not show strong differences among various UPS product features or specifications. Most UPS systems were similar in offerings and had little variation for end users to choose from as a result.
  • Growth in multiple applications for UPS systems across new segments will allow for various features and specifications to become more and less important. The uses for UPS systems across new applications such as entertainment will provide for more specific market segmentation and specialization by the vendors.
  • Standardization of product features and specifications, and the subsequent expectations of end users will demand new and improved product performance in areas such as battery back-up time and physical dimensions.

Ansoft Corp. recently joined the Synopsys in-Sync® program to improve the interoperability between Synopsys' Encore™ chip packaging software, HSPICE™, the golden standard for accurate circuit simulation, and Ansoft's HFSS™, SIwave™, Spicelink™, and Turbo Package Analyzer™ (TPA).

Users of Synopsys' Encore can now export their designs to an Ansoft tool and then, if desired, output their files to Synopsys HSPICE for further analysis.
