Taiyo Yuden, Inc. has introduced the PAS250, the second model in its new PAS Series of affordable, passive PFC-based, switch-mode power supplies for 1-U height, single-output applications. Like its 150-W companion model (PAS150), the PAS250 provides tremendous economic benefits to OEMs through use of passive versus active PFC technology. Not only is active PFC more complex and less reliable than passive, active also provides unnecessary functionality at higher cost.
The PAS250 switcher not only meets all Class A PFC requirements, but also provides greater reliability and higher MTBF (mean time between failure) through use of fewer components. Also, the relative cost per watt of a passive PFC switcher like the PAS250 is significantly less than a comparable switch-mode power supply employing active PFC techniques.
In operation, the PAS250 switcher provides a universal 115/230 Vac input selection and a single output of 250 W continuous power. The user may select one of several factory-set output voltages, including 12 V, 24 V and 48 V. The PAS250 switcher features optional current-sharing capability for 1+1 redundancy with no special interconnection requirement. Other options include remote on/off, and droop or single-wire current sharing with O-Ring diodes. The standard unit provides superb heat dissipation, but is also available with an optional fan with its own 12 Vdc supply. Other standard features include: dc “OK,” ac power fail, and protection against overload, overvoltage, reverse voltage and thermal conditions.
The PAS250 switcher physically measures just 7 in. x 4 in. x 1.5 in. and comes with a two-year warranty. Pricing is $55 each in OEM Quantities. They are available now.
