A recently posted application note from Maxim Integrated Products, “Selecting and Using RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 Serial Data Standards,” examines these popular standards according to their specifications and electrical interfaces. The app note addresses compatibility issues that may arise when these interfaces must communicate with one another such as might be required in control and instrumentation applications.

The Maxim app note discusses the different standards (electrical physical-layer specifications), explains how to convert from one standard to another standard, and demonstrates how to combine different standards within the same application.
