LED lighting designs earn DoE spotlight

The U.S. Dept. of Energy announced the winners in its fourth-annual Next Generation Luminaires Design Competition at the Lightfair International trade show in Las Vegas. The competition is intended to spur advancements in commercial LED light fixtures. A panel of eight judges evaluated entries based on lighting quality, appearance, serviceability, efficacy, value, dimming, and lifetime.

There were 114 entries from 45 companies, and 50 entries earned “winner” classifications. Three earned Best in Class Awards, including the MBW LED track accent fixture from Intense Lighting (Anaheim, Calif.), the H-Series LED high-bay fixture from Albeo Technologies Inc. (Boulder Col.), and the ST Series LED fixture from Lithonia Lighting, (Conyers, Ga.)

Other sponsors of the competition include the Illuminating Society of North America and the International Assoc. of Lighting Designers.
