Six months after its initial deployment, Hanaro Telecom has signed up 200,000 customers for its 100Mbps broadband service. Hanaro, Korea's major broadband service provider, says the network is the world's largest. The company said it was able to launch the service ahead of competitors using a standards-based channel-bonding technology created by Cisco. "Cisco has worked with us to deploy an industry leading cable modem termination system for broadband services and its engineering excellence has enabled a smooth and rapid service rollout," Chan Woong Park, senior vice president of Hanaro Telecom's Network Technology unit, said in a statement. The Cisco uBR10012 cable modem termination system (CMTS) provides an upgrade path to modular CMTS and DOCSIS 3.0 — two key industry standards for next-generation cable modem services. CMTS is a component of the Cisco IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture that will deliver converged voice, video and data services. It currently provides high-bandwidth service for HanaTV, Hanaro's video-on-demand IPTV service. Hanaro's broadband services are broadcast over hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) networks.
