Joint Research Venture To Explore Contactless ID Reliability

Jan. 16, 2013
A new research project will aim to identify the exact reliability requirements for electronic contactless identity and travel documents. The SeManTik project will investigate reliable new integration technologies as well as realistic models to test and predict the life span of identity documents.

Identity and travel documents are typically valid for a long period of time and must survive the harsh conditions of daily usage. No doubt, then, they must be extremely robust whilst maintaining security and reliability. To that end, a new research project will aim to identify the exact reliability requirements for electronic contactless identity and travel documents.  The project, called “SeManTik” (short for “secure and long-life eID applications for human-technology cooperation”), will investigate reliable new integration technologies as well as realistic models to test and predict the life span of identity documents. Leading the project is German printing company Bundesdruckerei, with help from partners Infineon and the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM). The overall goal of the project is to develop multifunctional technologies that will work without failure for a long period of time. However, intermediate goals involve developing standardised testing procedures and simulation models. Support for SeManTiK comes by way of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). As an associated partner, the Bundeskriminalamt (German Federal Criminal Police Office) is contributing its expertise in forensic and methodical analysis. Also, Bayer Material Science will offer its expertise in supporting materials.
