By placing the control of recharging cycles in the battery rather than charger, a new, patent-pending technology reportedly can deliver significant performance and convenience advantages over existing rechargeable and disposable battery systems. Targeted especially at nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, though also said to be practical for premium NiCds, the In-Cell Charging Control (I-C_) technology makes use of a mechanical pressure switch inside the battery to control internal cell pressure. This reportedly eliminates the need to build special electronics into fast chargers to monitor voltage and temperature and avoid excessive pressure build-up. Further, I-C_ is said to shorten charging time to only 15 minutes or less, to permit batteries to be recharged up to 1,000 times, to extend battery life, and to permit use of lower cost chargers.
