Load-Share Controller Keeps Outputs Of Parallel Power Supplies Equalized

Dec. 1, 2002

Designed to work with multiple, independent power supplies operating in parallel in communication systems, the UCC39002 load-share controller serves to equalizes the output currents of the parallel power supplies. The device meets Intel’s Server System Infrastructure (SSI) load sharing specifications for a single line load share bus and scalable load share voltage for any level of output currents. Employing a low offset post-package-trimmed current sense amplifier, the controller provides less than 1% current share error between modules at full load. With a common-mode range from 0V to 15V maximum, the current sense resistor can be placed in either the ground return path or in the positive output rail of the power supply. When supplies are being disconnected or added, the UCC39002 controller disconnects the system from the remaining active load share bus supplies. It also provides system protection by disabling the adjust function when the load share bus is shorted to either the ground or supply rail. Available in an eight-pin MSOP, the load-share controller costs $0.89 each/1,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Santa Clarita, CA. (800) 477-8924 ext 4500.
