Melding full-speed USB 2.0 functionality and high-capacity memory with a 16-bit MCU core, the M16C/245 (M30245) microcontroller is capable of performing communications data processing as well as main processing, making the device a strong candidate for use in portable audio and high-speed Internet content delivery applications. The 16-bit M16C MCU core is said to be noted for its C language efficiency, fast processing speed, low power dissipation, and exceptional EMI/EMS performance. Housed in a small, thin, 100-pin LQFP package, the new MCU features up to nine endpoints and can perform transfer mode on each one. In addition, each endpoint on transfer mode, as well as buffer size, can be optionally set. Further, a multi-function serial I/O that can transfer up to 32-bit data has been embedded into two channels, allowing for a serial sound interface with audio codecs. A CRC operations circuit has also been embedded in the chip for supporting various memory cards. The M16C/245 MCU packs 128 KB of flash and 10 KB of RAM, a 10-bit/8-bit a/d converter, and five 16-bit timers. Running at 16 MHz, the IC requires a 3.0V to 3.6V supply. Price is $16.50 each in sample quantities. Volume production is scheduled for September. MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC & ELECTRONICS USA INC., Electronic Device Group, Sunnyvale, CA. (408) 730-5900.
