Having recently completed joint qualification of Magma Design Automation’s Quartz DRC, Quartz LVS, and Quartz DFM tools, Magma and UMC rolled out a physical-verification and DFM flow for UMC’s 65-nm process. In addition to the tool qualifications, the companies developed qualified runsets and models to support the flow.

The Magma-UMC flow is tuned to run smoothly and detect design problems so that they’re corrected quickly. With the software, runsets, and models, designers can accelerate time-to-market and improve manufacturability of chips targeted for UMC’s advanced 65-nm process technology.

Quartz DRC and Quartz LVS are fully scalable design-rule checking (DRC) and layout-vs.-schematic (LVS) tools, both of which enable massively distributed processing. With this technology and the right number of processors, virtually any design can be physically verified in less than two hours, the company claims. Quartz DFM allows designers to analyze and characterize the timing and power impact due to sources of manufacturing variability, such as lithography and CMP. With this, designers can reduce the guardbanding required by traditional design flows, ultimately producing significant gains in timing and power performance.
