Aug. 1, 2001

Designed for use in high-end audiophile and professional audio equipment, the AK4383 two-channel and the AK4357 six-channel d/a converters use the company's 32-level, multi-bit delta-sigma modulator. The AK4357 is claimed to be the industry's first six-channel, direct-stream-digital (DSD) d/a converter and both devices support both Super Audio CD (SACD) DSD and 24-bit, 192-kHz DVD audio formats.Key features of the converters includes differential outputs, a digital volume control that allows control of replay levels regardless of the data format, and a soft-mute function that allows for changing input streams without stopping the signal transmission. The AK4357 in a 48-pin LQFP costs $4.84 and the AK4383 in a 20-pin TSSOP costs $2.59, each/1,000. AKM SEMICONDUCTOR, INC., San Jose, CA. (888) 256-7364.
