STMicroelectronics' LIS331EB miniature smart sensor combines a 3-axis digital accelerometer with an embedded microcontroller, operating as a sensor hub that runs sensor-fusion algorithms, together in an ultra-compact 3x3x1 mm LGA package called iNEMO-A, for advanced custom motion-recognition capabilities. Reducing demand on the host controller and application processor, the smart sensor renders decreased power consumption in portable devices. An embedded ultra-low-power ARM Cortex-M0 with functional capability, power consumption and memory size, suits the device for sensor-hub applications and iNEMO sensor fusion on mobile applications. The sensor hub also supports the connection of a 3-axis gyroscope, 3-axis magnetometer and a pressure sensor. The digital accelerometer contains two embedded finite state machines and an embedded FIFO, which enable custom motion-recognition detection, including specific gesture detection. The accelerometer also features a selectable full-scale range of ±2g/±4g/±8g/±16g and multiple timers and I/O ports (GPIOs/SPI/I2C/UART). The LIS331EB smart motion sensor will begin sampling in Q2 2013 with pricing at $2.40 each/1,000.
