New radiation hardened 1 Gbit NOR Flash memory optimizes space grade FPGAs New radiation hardened 1 Gbit NOR Flash memory optimizes space grade FPGAs ‎13 Oct 2025 09:10 PM As space exploration continues to push new boundaries and innovations, the need for highly reliable memory solutions has become even more important. Infineon has a 50+ year history supporting iconic space missions with reliable radiation hardened solutions. Infineon's new rad hard 1 Gbit non-volatile NOR Flash memory is the latest addition to our high reliability portfolio , bringing robust performance to extreme environment applications. Our new device can uniquely enhance a system’s overall computing while also providing benefits in size, weight, and power (SWaP) consumption requirements. Extreme environmental demands Our 1 Gbit NOR Flash device is designed to perform in harsh space conditions. Offering the highest radiation performance for space-grade FPGAs, our memory’s unique architecture enables reliability and durability in mission-critical applications. Ultimate reliability in space With a TID rating of 300 krad(Si), the 512 Mbit device safeguards data integrity and system functionality, even in high-radiation settings. The device features a Single Event Latch-up (SEL) >80 MeV.cm2/mg [LET] at 125ºC. It additionally boasts a Single Event Functional Interrupt (SEFI) of 2.77e-5 err/dev day. Lastly, it guarantees Single Event Upset (SEU) immunity and a military temperature grade of -55 °C to +125 °C. This reliability is crucial for maintaining operational stability in demanding applications, such as satellite payloads and FPGA configurations. Lightning-fast performance Mission-critical timelines demand swift and reliable system initialization. Our 1 Gb rad hard NOR Flash is well suited for space FPGAs that need a minimum of ~800Mb bitsteam images such as the AMD-Xilinx Versl FPGA. Additional features include: 10 years data retention at 125 °C  3.3 V supply voltage 1.8/3.3 V I/O support Space-saving design The 1 Gbit device features a low pin-count interface, uniquely minimizing spatial requirements without compromising on functionality. Our device supports a dual QSPI interface in a x8 mode and a single channel SPI mode for legacy support. Both interfaces are supported by modern FPGA devices and utilize standard instruction sets. The device is packaged in a 68-pin ceramic quad flat pack with a plastic option coming out later this year. Key applications Our NOR Flash device plays a vital role in supporting space missions, providing a reliable and efficient foundation for advanced applications. Applications include: FPGA Configuration: Ensures rapid and reliable boot times for space-grade FPGAs, essential for mission-critical data processing and decision-making Boot Code Storage: Ideal for standalone and embedded boot code storage in satellite processors, providing a robust solution for system initialization Conclusion Investing in our latest 1 Gbit rad hard NOR Flash memory ensures utmost reliability and advanced performance in your space designs.
