India just made its biggest move yet to pull electronics manufacturing out of China — and it's aiming squarely at the country that makes roughly 70% of the world's electronic components. In this video, Octopart breaks down ECMS, India's Electronic Components Manufacturing Scheme: a ~$6.65 billion push behind 75 approved projects across 11 component categories, backed by about $4.8 billion in government incentives. We get into why this is a geopolitical move and not just industrial policy, what India will (and won't) be able to make, and what actually changes if you source components for a living.
Under the hood, ECMS runs on capex- and turnover-linked subsidies, and — the part most coverage misses — it's built on joint ventures that quietly let Chinese partners hold up to 26% ownership, transferring IP without handing over control. It's "China plus one," but with Chinese know-how poured into the concrete. Names like Foxconn (Yuzhan), Dixon, and Samsung are already in, and Apple is shipping record numbers of phones out of India. We cover the three things this means for sourcing — new dual-sourcing options on parts like PCBs, copper clad laminates, and optical transceivers; tariff insulation; and long-term pricing pressure — plus an honest reality check on passive components (MLCCs, resistors), where India is still starting near zero.
