Powering up the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) satellite, the company’s li-ion battery, built by Orbital Sciences Corp., employs the same cells deployed in the Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit, and Opportunity. Reportedly, the cells have been successfully operating on the surface of Mars for almost five years. The 10.5 Ah cells on IBEX are arranged in a two-parallel/four-series configuration to supply 14.4 Vdc nominal with a 21-Ah capacity.
