The VIPer31 is an intelligent power device optimized for use in battery chargers and similar applications requiring rectangular constant-current, constant-voltage characteristics. The device is built using a technology that enables a PWM controller and its associated protection circuits to be integrated on the same chip as a power MOSFET.The device is designed for use in the discontinuous flyback mode. Primary current is controlled by the power MOSFET switch, which is, in turn, controlled by a circuit that monitors the transformer demagnetization by means of an auxiliary winding. This eliminates the need for an optocoupler between the primary and secondary control circuits. The device also offers automatic burst-mode operation under light loads.
