Intended as a dc-to-dc converter for the core CPU in notebook computers, the MAX1710 step-down controller offers the ultra-fast transient response, high dc accuracy, and high efficiency needed for powering leading-edge CPUs. The converters feature the firm’s proprietary constant-on-time control scheme (QUICK-PWM), which handles wide ratios of I/O voltage and maintains relatively constant switching frequency with 100-ns instant-on response to load transients. And its dc precision is ensured by a two-wire remote sensing scheme that compensates for voltage drops of the supply rail and ground bus. An internal 4-bit D/A converter sets the output voltage in accordance with Intel’s Mobile Pentium II CPU specs.
