DC/DC Converters Extend Battery Life

Aug. 1, 2004
Measuring just 2 mm x 1 mm, the 500-mA TPS62300 family debuts as the market's smallest and most efficient step-down dc/dc converters. The devices achieve efficiencies up to 93% while operating at 3 MHz and delivering output voltages from 0.6V to 5.4V.

Over the industrial temperature range, voltage-regulation accuracy spans -0.5% to 1.3%. Additionally, a unique design topology allows the use of smaller external components. Also unveiled, the TPS6107x synchronous-switch, 600-mA dc/dc boost converters in six-pin, 3 mm x 3 mm ThinSOT-23 packages support input voltages from 0.9V to 5.5V and generate up to 5.5V at greater than 90% efficiency. They operate at 1.2 MHz and specify a quiescent current of 15 µA typical and a maximum shutdown current of 1 µA. Output currents are beyond 75 mA at 3.3V from a 0.9V supply and 150 mA at 3.3V from a 1.8V supply. Prices for the TPS6230x and TPS6107x are $1.85 and $0.95 each/1,000, respectively.
