For designers of cell phones, mobile audio, computer, and consumer apps, the FAN3989 over-voltage protection (OVP) device integrates a FET and features built-in automatic detection that allows the device to sense the presence of a USB charger. Allegedly, the automatic detection feature simplifies designs by eliminating external circuitry. The device acts as a USB monitor to determine if a USB device or a charging battery is connected and will send a signal to the system controller to indicate the presence of a USB charging device. It also monitors the VBUS for over- or under-voltage conditions, setting the FLAG 2 pin low if VBUS is under 3.3V or over 6V while turning off the internal PMOS load switch. Available in an eight-lead MLP, price is $0.46 each/1,000. FAIRCHILD SEMICONDUCTOR, South Portland, ME. (800) 341-0392.
