Step-Down Converter Drives PAs In Mobile Handsets

March 4, 2011
The MAX8989 step-down converter drives power-amplifier (PA) modules in mobile phones and is allegedly the first in the industry to support power management for multiple communication protocols.

The MAX8989 step-down converter drives power-amplifier (PA) modules in mobile phones and is allegedly the first in the industry to support power management for multiple communication protocols. It integrates a switching regulator with a parallel bypass LDO regulator to guarantee maximum efficiency under all conditions. The LDO smoothes the transition between step-down regulation and operation in dropout, allowing for a seamless migration to higher power levels. The MAX8989 handles up to 2.5A and is fully specified over an extended temperature range. Prices start at $1.92 each/1,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
