Tiny Charge Pump Delivers 100 mA

Fitting into a space that measures just 0.05 in.2, the MAX1759 regulated charge pump, dc-to-dc converter generates a fixed 3.3V, or adjustable output voltage from a 1.6V to 5.5V input supply. The small device is capable of delivering a 100-mA output current using three small ceramic capacitors and does not require an inductor. Quiescent supply current is as low as 50 µA and drops to 1 µA in shutdown. The output load is completely disconnected from the input at shutdown. The device operates at frequencies up to 1.5 MHz and employs an open-drain, power-OK output signal to indicate when the output is out of regulation. Other features include foldback short-circuit protection, soft start, and an extended, industrial temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. The tiny charge pump comes in a 10-pin µMAX package and costs $2.45 each/1000.
