Six-Channel Audio Codec Supports DVD Applications

June 1, 2002

Expected to give a significant boost to demand for PCs capable of delivering audio comparable to that of consumer audio equipment, the ALC650 six-channel codec is fully compliant with AC'97 v2.2 specs, as well as with the traditional 2-channel interface. The audio codec provides playback functions at a sample rate of 96 kHz and can support DVD applications. The chip can also provide legacy interfacing with support for six-channel outputs at the back panel with a dedicated microphone input at the front panel, eliminating the need for an external bracket. The 48-pin LQFP ALC650 also supports S/PDIF I/O, allowing digital connections to DVD and other audio/video multimedia systems. It can even provide advanced media player, sound environment emulation, and karaoke mode support.
