5G pushes the envelope in terms of performance and efficiency, but also makes evaluation, design, and testing more challenging. Design techniques that were not required for 3G or 4G support are now being used for 5G such as waveguides. Tailoring these to small form factors can be difficult, but the benefits can be worth the effort.
Given the more challenging requirements for 5G and the plethora of implementation details and options it is worth separating the hype from the real haystack. Part of the challenge is the mix of implementations as well as tradeoffs in speed and distance that can be hard to explain to users. The increased number of cells is also an issue that needs to be addressed as deployment is not simply a matter of upgrading existing systems to 5G.
