SAR ADC Family Extends Analog-Supply, Common-Mode Voltage Ranges

A dozen new successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) from Texas Instruments deliver a wider array of input commode-mode and analog-supply voltages. The extended common-mode range simplifies signal conditioning and facilitates digitization of the difference between two independent sensor signals with widely varying common-mode voltage values. Analog-supply voltage ranges from 2.7 to 3.6 V, enabling direct operation from a Li-ion battery. Digital-supply voltage ranges from 1.65 to 3.6 V. The one-channel ADS8881 family offers 18- and 16-bit devices with speed options ranging from 100 ksamples/s to 1 Msample/s. The devices consume 5.5 mW at 1 Msample/s and 55 µW at 10 ksamples/s, which suit them for pulsed dc measurements in portable medical and heat-sensitive automated test applications. All family members are pin-compatible and come in MSOP and QFN package options. In addition, six reference designs are included to help jump-start design.
