EMC in Space a Highlight of ISEMC

Two well-known experts in the fields of EMC and signal integrity and special sessions on EMC in space are among the highlights of the IEEE EMC Society’s International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility (ISEMC) Aug. 14-19 at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center.

Henry Ott, a leading EMC educator with more than 40 years of experience, will conduct the daylong Fundamentals of EMC tutorial on Monday, Aug. 15. Dr. Howard Johnson, an authority on signal integrity and an accomplished author, will address high-speed conductors in a special session held during the three-day technical program.

The ISEMC schedule includes technical paper sessions and integrated special sessions, workshops, tutorials, the Global EMC University, demonstrations, experiments, and exhibits as well as standards, working groups, committee and board meetings and three iNARTE exams. In addition, there will be several social events, a five-day companion program, and the junior technical program.

A total of 185 peer-reviewed technical papers will be presented on Tuesday (Aug. 16), Wednesday (Aug. 17), and Thursday (Aug. 18) in both oral and poster paper presentations. The technical sessions and integrated special sessions represent technical topic areas associated with the IEEE EMC society technical committees.

The special session topics will concentrate on large EM problems, EMC in space, full-channel characterization, and signal integrity for high-speed connectors with Dr. Johnson, each including several papers. EMC in Space, the first special session dedicated to space-related issues, is a multiday affair, and 17 papers currently are scheduled to focus on space environments and their EMI effect or space-vehicle EMC.

Details on the three-day technical program including the computer modeling and simulation demonstrations and the hardware experiments are available at www.emc2011.org.

Workshops and Tutorials

Workshops and tutorials will be offered on Monday (Aug. 15) and Friday (Aug. 19). Two tutorials, Fundamentals of EMC with Mr. Ott and Transportation System EMC, will be full-day events; the remaining will be half-day sessions. Other areas to be covered include contemporary industry topics facilitated by the EMC Society technical committees, standards working groups, and others.

Global EMC University

The Global EMC University celebrates its fifth anniversary as part of the ISEMC. The university comprises 20 hours of instruction in basic EMC-related topics that run in parallel with the traditional technical sessions. The classes, taught by a panel of educators, provide a comprehensive introduction to basic EMC concepts and skills.

Participants in the university must have an engineering or technology degree with electrical theory. A certificate of completion will be provided, and CEUs will be assigned. Students must pay a full ISEMC registration plus a Global EMC University fee.

iNARTE Examination

Two different iNARTE certification exams will be conducted on Friday. In addition to the traditional eight-hour examinations for EMC engineers or technicians that run concurrently, a new six-hour examination leading to a certification for EMC design engineers will be available for the first time. This certification, developed with the cooperation of electronics and automotive corporations in the United States and Japan, has less emphasis on testing, metrology, and standards. For more information, visit www.narte.org.

Exhibits

Companies from around the world will be exhibiting the latest EMC products and services ranging from EMC modeling software to complete test systems. Currently, the scheduled exhibit hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Registration and Reservations

Registration forms for the ISEMC can be found at www.emc2011.org. Several registration classifications are available: a one-day visit with a discounted entry for students; a five-day program with reduced rates for IEEE lifetime members and retired, unemployed, or student attendees; and free five-day admission for EMC-S honored members. The fees increase after July 17. There is no charge for admission to the exhibit hall or the youth technical program.

The Hyatt Regency, located next door to the Long Beach Convention Center, is the headquarters hotel. Reservations can be made online or by using the reservation request form, both available on the ISEMC website. To guarantee the symposium room rates, reservations must be made by July 15.

Details on committee meetings, social activities, companion tours, the junior technical program, and the post-symposium trip to Catalina Island on Saturday (Aug. 20) also can be found at www.emc2011.org.
