Measuring only 70 x 45 x 10 mm, this new erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is believed to be the smallest such device available today. Manufacturers of optical systems or subsystems should find the device, known as the PGE 60841, saves board space and reduces power consumption. The PGE 60841 functions in single channel or narrowband applications in the C-band wavelength range where gain flattening is not required. If optimized, it can perform as a booster, line or pre-amplifier in systems or subsystems, both in long-haul and metro applications. Despite its compact size, the EDFA includes integrated input and output monitoring diodes and uses an uncooled mini-DIL pump laser to provide output power up to +15 dBm (booster and line amplifier), small signal gain up to 25 dB (pre-amplifier) and a noise figure of less than 6 dB. The PGE 60841 amplifier consumes a maximum 0.75W, minimizing power requirements and heat generation. All EDFAs meet Telcordia standards and offer global technical support.
