Faster data throughput and efficient data-byte filtering make the MCP2515 controller-area-network (CAN) IC a contender for serial-communication applications. The device offers a maximum clock-input speed of 40 MHz and a 10-MHz serial peripheral interface for easy connection to any microcontroller. It also can filter messages based on the first two data bytes and the 11 identifier bits. Pricing is $1.72 each in lots of 1000 for PDIP and SOIC packages.
