Front-End Converter Pushes 800 W In Small Package

Aug. 9, 2006
Magnetek’s HPD-800 handles 20 W per cubic in.

The HPD-800 converter delivers 800 W of 12-V dc power from a package only 9.84 by 2.36 by 1.65 in, equating to over 20 W per cubic in. That’s the highest power density available from a front-end power supply, according to Magnetek Inc. The unit’s power conversion efficiency is more than 90% under full load at 230 V ac input. Its efficiency and small size make it well-suited for use in broadband, data storage, and other energy-intensive applications.

Integral air cooling permits the HPD-800 converters to operate in ambient temperatures up to 50°C over an input range of 85 to 264 V ac, while supplying 67 A at 12 V dc in distributed-power architecture systems. Operating alone or in parallel, the converter’s 1U form factor and "hot plug" capability allow "hot swap" system design flexibility. The use of I2C (or optional RS-485) communications permits remote system monitoring and control.
