Multipoint-LVDS Receivers Save Space, Power, Cost

The SN65MLVD2 and SN65MLVD3 dedicated M-LVDS receivers eliminate the need for a transceiver when converting M-LVDS to LVTTL in backplane applications.

A pair of dedicated multipoint-LVDS (M-LVDS) receivers are the first such devices available, according to Texas Instruments. The receivers eliminate the need to use transceivers with unnecessary circuitry when converting M-LVDS to LVTTL for multi-drop clock distribution. The SN65MLVD2 type-1 M-LVDS receiver provides the best noise margin with switching occurring near the 0-V (differential) input level. The SN65MLVD3 type-2 version provides built-in failsafe protection and eliminates the need for external pull-up/pull-down resistors.

Other key features include clock frequencies to 125 MHz, signaling rates to 250 Mbits/s, support for 30- to 50-Ω line impedances, and a high input impedance with a low VCC. In addition, a wide receiver common-mode Vin range of -1 V to 3.4 V allows up to 2 V of ground noise. The devices meet or exceed the TIA/EIA-899 M-LVDS standard for multipoint topology and their bus-pin HBM electrostatic discharge protection exceeds 9 kV. The SN65MLVD2 type-1 receiver has 25 mV of input threshold hysteresis to prevent output ringing. The SN65MLVD3 type-2 receiver has a 100-mV offset threshold to detect open-circuit and idle-bus conditions. The receivers come in 8-pin small-outline packages.
