The CS4202 is an AC'97 2.2-compliant stereo audio codec designed for use in multichannel PC-surround audio systems. This multipurpose IC includes DVD playback support with easy scalability to 5.1 channels through the addition of two CS4334 digital-to-analog converters (DACs). An integrated headphone amplifier provides surround audio for PC-based entertainment. Also, this codec integrates a programmable microphone preamplifier and an on-chip phase-locked loop (PLL) for use with external clock circuitry. The CS4202 can be combined with a PCI audio accelerator or core logic supporting the AC'97 interface. Additional features include automatic jack sense through GPIO, S/PDIF digital audio output, and I2S serial digital outputs that enable 5.1-channel applications. Exceeding Microsoft PC2001 audio performance requirements, the CS4202 includes drivers that have been WHQL certified for all current Windows operating systems. In a 48-pin TQFP package, the CS4202 costs $1.44 in 100,000-unit quantities.
