Operating at speeds up to 550 ksamples/s, the AD7686 16-bit, successive approximation register (SAR) a/d converter is said to be the fastest available. Rated at 20 mW with a 2.7V supply, the IC is also claimed to exhibit the lowest power consumption for this type device. The SAR converter has no missing codes, an INL of ±3 LSB maximum, SNR of 89 dB typical at 10 kHz, no pipeline delays, and pin compatibility with the PulSAR family of converters. The chip comes in a 10-lead MSOP measuring 5 x 3 mm and operates at temperatures from -40°C to 85°C. Price is $12 each/1,000. ANALOG DEVICES INC, Wilmington, MA. (800) 262-5643.
